The marine macroalgae LISI collection includes specimens organized in five sub collections: (1) Mainland Portugal marine macroalgae collected between 1880 and 1983, and additional 16 sites revisited in 2020-2021; (2) Azores marine macroalgae, collected by Ilídio Botelho Gonçalves; (3) Foreign marine macroalgae, encompassing British marine macroalgae, collected by Cândido Pinto Ricardo, Farlow Herbarium (FH), Harvard University duplicate vouchers stack and Emile Deyrolle didactic preparations acquisitions; (4) Freshwater algae, where we locate “Algal weeds from rice fields”, a research project led by João de Carvalho e Vasconcellos during the 1950’s; and some accessory documentation on the projects that led to this material. (5) a miscellaneous folder containing several exsiccatae fragments belonging to different taxa of red, green, and brown marine macroalgae with virtually no information regarding collectors, collection site and other scientific or historical information. Overall, it is possible to group collectors in two main clusters: members of Broterian Society (Sociedade Broteriana), the oldest Portuguese botanical non-governmental organization founded by botanical professor Júlio Henriques from Coimbra University in 1880; and researchers or technicians somewhat related to ISA or one of the pre-existing institutions linked to ISA’s foundation event (e.g. Instituto Geral de Agricultura and Instituto de Agronomia e Veterinária). The total number of collectors in the collection is 30.
