We wanted to be sure to include the scene where Artutro and his friends were discussing how poorly they were being treated, because it was such a critical moment in the actual film. This happening to Arturo is what triggered Enrique to try and go to the North. In the original scene, they were in a secret location; we tried to recreate that by filming the scene in a Hinton James lounge rather than in someone’s room. Also, the problem in our scene is different from what they discuss in the real movie. In ours, they talk about the mold in the Hinton James AC units, and how little the Carolina Housing cares about their health. We incorporated the reading from class about the lack of water in El Salvador in this scene, in order to contrast the fictional problem that our characters faced with a real life problem that is affecting thousands of people. We incorporated other parts of our class readings into the rest of the movie, as well, such as Anzaldua’s works. The knowledge that we learned in class helped shape the movie, and gave us real-life examples of the problems that many Latin Americans face.
