Can Increasing Avenues for Standardized Developmental Screening Improve Health Benefits for Young Children? This paper investigates what effects standardized developmental screening instruments in community settings can have on accessibility, assessment and early intervention in identified developmental concerns. Developmental screening provides a technique to identify abnormal growth and development in children as well as identifying opportunities for early medical intervention. Primary care settings have characteristically delivered screenings in conjunction with well child visits but fail to utilize standardized screening tools consistently. Literature review demonstrates utilizing standardized screening tools in medical and community settings have succeeded in increasing evidence-based screening practices. Initiatives such as the Assuring Better Child Health Development (ABCD) project have implemented models of coordinated community based screening, assessment, and intervention approaches for young children. This paper concludes strategies should be implemented for standardized screening practices in community settings serving young children to optimize the success of developmental screening opportunities.
