Gary discusses growing up in Staunton, VA, then attending the University of Virginia for his undergraduate degree, where he came out. He talks about the AIDS epidemic, working for Belk Leggett and meeting his husband in Staunton, and coming back to UVA to work in 1989. Gary discusses being gay at UVA before and after sexual orientation was added to the university’s nondiscrimination policy and his work on the UVA LGBT Committee, including work to improve insurance and benefits for UVA staff, faculty, and students, and working with the UVA Medical Center to improve their care of LGBTQ patients and transgender patients in particular. He shares his experiences being gay in Staunton and Charlottesville then and now and reflects on the LGBTQ community in those cities today.
