Possible solutions and novel methods to expand the capabilities of indoor local positioning using RSS-based ranging are proposed and discussed in the thesis. Redundant RSS sensor readings using a diversity radio module and an adapted radio propagation model for tunnel environments are used to compensate the multipath fading behavior for a more accurate ranging. With an improved weighted centroid localization approach and additional plausibility filter techniques for position estimates, a reliable tracking in indoor multipath environments is feasible using low-cost infrastructure components.
