Great Depression scholars universally consider the Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act (often called Smoot-Hawley) as a major contributor to the economic devastation that turned a business cycle recession into the Great Depression. Yet, very few go as far as to declare the protectionist tariff act as the recession’s initial leading cause. The possibility deserves more consideration.
