These are calculated from the global potential forest cover (A) subtracting existing forest cover and removing agricultural and urban areas. This global tree restoration potential represents an area of 1.8 billion hectares of forest (Globcover; Table S2) or of 1.7 billion hectares of forest (Fritz and colleagues (2015); Table S2).
