The report analyses the landscape of digitization of cultural heritage in Europe considering EU policy documents, past EU-funded research and forthcoming programmes such as the Digital Europe one. It examines the situation of the most important actor in this framework, Europeana, and the requirements of increasing the number and quality of digitized assets with a special attention to 3D digitization. Finally, it summarizes some research results about some relevant aspects of 3D modelling. As preliminary results, it lists actions to be undertaken to guarantee that the targets are achieved not only in the numbers, but mainly concerning data quality, establishing opportunities for their re-use in other economic sectors and complying with the needs of researchers, heritage professionals and institutions, education and the public at large.
