FANRPAN and four other institutions (Hutton Institute, University of Nairobi, University of Birmingham, and KALRO Food Crops Research Institute Kenya) submitted a proposal for funding to BBSRC on collaboration research titled “ZIRON Pulse: Upscaling adoption and exploitation of a wide diversity of Iron and Zinc-rich beans by rural populations in Africa”. The research started in July 2020 and has run until February 2023. The main objectives of the research were to obtain new knowledge related to micronutrient-fortified bean innovations and provide essential underpinning science that contributes to global food and nutritional security, economic development and growth through the development of health-promoting common bean varieties with proven nutritional efficacy.
FANRPAN work package focused on coming up with strategies of enhancing adoption and utilization of the ZIRON pulse by developing a tool kit package for mobilization, sensitization, educating commercialization and engagement of various stakeholders and players in the whole bean value chains.
This technical brief (Lessons Learned) presents the lessons learnt in promoting the adoption and utilization of biofortified bean (ZIRON pulse) varieties in Kenya. Against the background of a desk review and formative research carried out prior to promoting the ZIRON pulse, with the aim of identifying and mapping the status of biofortified bean utilization and consumption and barriers associated with, the strategies shared in this brief are key lessons to consider when introducing a new technology/innovation(seed) to the general population.
