Wessex Archaeology was commissioned to undertake an archaeological evaluation at Cedars Park, Stowmarket. Despite geophysical survey of the site suggesting few features within the site bounds, activity dating to the Iron Age, Romano-British and post-medieval periods was identified within six of the 20 excavated trenches. Consistent with results from works associated with the wider residential development, pit clusters dating to the early/middle Iron Age were revealed. These may be associated with the Iron Age and Romano-British site found to the north, and, though no evidence for settlement activity was identified during the evaluation, with the Iron Age settlement located during previous archaeological investigations undertaken as part of Cedars Park Phase 3 works. Despite Romano-British features located north of the site, adjacent to Gun Cotton Way, results pertaining to such activity were limited. A single ditch is confidently attributed to the period due to pottery recovered, though other, undated features, may also be of the same period. Similarly a lack of medieval features is noticeable, and may be accountable through a lack of dating evidence. Post-medieval features comprise a likely track, identified through the presence of wheel rutting and probable trackside ditch. Although a lack of dating evidence has been noted for a number of features, the assemblage recovered (animal bone, pottery, ceramic building material, burnt flint, worked flint) indicates a potential for the site to produce larger, more informative quantities of artefactual evidence.
