On the 16th November 2018 York Archaeological Trust conducted a building recording exercise at Scarborough Railway Bridge, York (SE 59620 52066). The work was undertaken for Amco Giffen to as part of planning consent granted by the City of York Council (17/03049/FULM). The work was based on a Written Scheme of Investigation produced by YAT. The bridge was built in 1845 to service the York and North Midland Railway Line from York to Scarborough. The bridge consists of a modern steel track deck carried by stone abutments and a central pier. The abutments and pier date to 1845 when the bridge carried a cast iron track deck. The track deck was replaced with the construction of York Station in 1877 with wrought iron lattice girders. The late-19th century track deck survived until it was replaced in 2015 with a wider steel deck, carried by the original abutments and pier.
