Between the 2nd and the 6th November 2020 York Archaeological Trust conducted a small excavation at St Mary's Church, Ecclesfield (SK 35281 94215). The work was undertaken for Wiles and Maguire Ltd in advance of construction for an access ramp to the west door of the church. YAT was asked to undertake the work in response to the uncovering of burials and significant stone foundations during the course of initial ground removal. The works involved the excavation and recording of seven burials, a stone foundation and three large fragments of carved stone, deemed to be part of a medieval cross shaft.
