Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by the Redrow Homes Limited to undertake an archaeological evaluation of a 4.8 ha parcel of land located at Swing Swang Lane, Basingstoke, Hampshire, RG24 7AN, centred on NGR 465598 152802. The works were undertaken in support of a planning application for residential development of the site. This report sets out the results of the evaluation which consisted of 28 trenches located throughout the development area and equating to a 4% sample. Six of the 28 excavated trial trenches contained archaeological features and deposits. One small Middle to late Bronze Age pit and a Medieval lynchet were observed. The remaining archaeological features were recorded as undated, although worked flint and a single abraded pottery sherd indicate background prehistoric activity on the site. The undated features included a probable boundary ditch, a possible ditch, one gully and four discrete features, interpreted as pits.
