The archaeological work comprised the machine excavation of nineteen 50mx1.8m trenches. Marsh Farm Formation deposits were overlain by head deposits of silt and clay (Brickearth), subsoil (plough pan) and topsoil. Three possible periods of archaeological activity were identified: prehistoric (probably Late Bronze Age), later Roman and perhaps post-medieval. The dated prehistoric features comprised three post-holes and a small pit forming a curving alignment that was perhaps structural. A number of undated ditches perhaps represented a broadly SE-NW prehistoric coaxial field system. Two ditches produced later Roman pottery (one closely dated to 2AD270-350) and, together with several undated ditches, perhaps represented elements of a broadly ESE-WNW field system. A single perhaps post-medieval boundary ditch, partially backfilled with gravel to facilitate drainage, was tentatively identified.
