This report details the results of an archaeological strip, map and sample excavation that was carried out by University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) at Paddock south of Hinckley Road, Barwell, Leicestershire LE9 8DP (NGR: SP 4349 9612) in June 2021 on behalf of Mr and Mrs Jackson during groundworks associated with the construction of a new Ménage. The site lies on the southern side of Hinckley Road, immediately to the west of a rectangular earthwork enclosure believed to represent the remains of a possible medieval moated site and 1.2km south west of the historic core of Barwell. Recent archaeological trial trenching undertaken approximately 280m to the north-east of the site has identified a series of ditches and gullies containing medieval and Anglo-Saxon pottery, which is of particular significance due to its scarcity. The archaeological work revealed three ditches and gullies. One was a large L-shaped ditch that appears to form the corner of a large enclosure, possibly associated with the medieval moated site to the east. One sherd of Roman pottery and a worked flint were retrieved from the large ditch, however this is probably residual. Animal bone was also recovered from the same ditch.
