This collection comprises images, site records, and CAD plans from evaluation and open excavation, undertaken by Archaeological Research Services Ltd., on land bounded by Wellington Street, Trafalgar Street and Rockingham Street in Sheffield. The work was undertaken between January and February 2021 in accordance with a condition attached to planning permission granted for the demolition of existing buildings and the erection of mixed use building up to 12/17/38 storeys to form residential units with ancillary amenities. The site had previously been subject to a desk-based assessment which identified that there was a potential for 19th century structures to survive on the site associated with a former steelworks in the south-eastern corner of the site and terraced back-to-back housing in the western part of the site. As a result the planning permission specified that an initial scheme of archaeological trial trenching would be undertaken to evaluate the level of survival, nature and date of any archaeological remains that may have existed on the site. Based on the results of the trial trenching, targeted open area excavations were undertaken in areas deemed to be of archaeological interest, to further clarify and understand the surviving archaeological remains.
