This digital archive contains images from a response to a condition on the planning consent for development of Bunbury Cottage, Fore Street, Weston, Hertfordshire. The Heritage Network was commissioned by the owner to undertake a programme of archaeological monitoring of the development groundworks between 13th January 2020 and 14th February 2020. The site is located close to the centre of Weston, on the eastern side of Fore Street, within a defined Area of Archaeological Significance, which encompasses the historic core of Weston. The monitoring of the groundworks for the present development revealed a stratigraphic sequence largely consisting of topsoil and made-ground directly over the natural substrate. The lack of subsoils indicates that the site has been subject to significant disturbance and re-profiling. Some ground reduction may have taken place in the 1980s, to provide a level base for the existing garage and patio, but the large quantity of late post-medieval and Victorian pottery recovered suggests that the site was heavily disturbed in the first half of the 20th century, when the earlier terrace of cottages was demolished.
