The route of the Tirley feeder connector (all eight plots) was subject to a DBA and field reconnaissance survey in 2008, which fed into an Environmental Statement. A separate geophysical survey of the route was also undertaken and reported on shortly thereafter. Whilst this work identified some areas of interest there was not thought to be anything of sufficient value present to justify large scale intrusive investigation (such as sample evaluation), or to require the delineation of areas of initial excavation. As a result only one plot (plot 4) was initially targeted for trial trench evaluation whilst the rest were assigned a watching brief. Of the three plots along the pipeline route which revealed finds or features only plot 2 produced sufficient data to have potential to contribute to the analysis themes established during the Brecon to Tirley UPD. In particular, the discovery of two 2nd/3rd century Roman enclosures in close proximity adds to developing our understanding of the Roman rural settlement pattern and, in particular, expands the pipeline dataset for Gloucestershire, which was particularly sparse during the original Brecon to Tirley pipeline project.
