This collection comprises the digital archive from archaeological work on a 0.4 ha parcel of land off Rockingham Street, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S1 4EG, undertaken by Wessex Achaeology and commissioned by Watkin Jones Group. The data is derived from four phases of work identified by phase numbers: 226160: An Archaeological Watching Brief between 1 October 2019 to 16 October 2019, 226161: A Field Evaluation between 25th November 2019 and 13th December 2019, 226162: The Post-Excavation Assessment phase between 6 January 2020 to 21 February 2020, and 226163: The Pottery Analysis undertaken June 2021. The digital archive generated by the project, including the evaluation records, comprises born-digital and scanned data, such as site records, survey data, databases and spreadsheets, photographs and reports. The excavation of the 'Grunwergs 2' site in 2019 and 2020 revealed the remains of the Bailey Lane Works of the John & Riley Carr company. The remains of four crucible furnaces were revealed, there was evidence for a gas regenerator connected to a large chimney, the cellars and other fragmentary remains of workers' housing were also revealed. The natural topography of the site was complex and had been levelled prior to development, the deep layers of imported material producing pottery of unusual chronological consistency spanning the mid-18th-mid-19th century.
