Archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out by AC archaeology during groundworks associated with the erection of a single storey extension at The Castle, Castle Street, Bampton, Devon. The Castle is a Grade II listed former inn, which closed in 1969 and was converted to two properties in the late 1980s. The new extension occupies part of the yard area to the rear. Monitored groundworks comprised the excavation of an approximately 0.6m wide footings trench and the removal of a retaining wall to the northeast. Despite the location of the site within the historic core of Bampton, no evidence for pre-modern activity was exposed by the groundworks. The excavation of the footings trench revealed 19th century made ground overlying the natural subsoil, with overlying deposits comprising further layers associated with a former extension or soils for a garden bed.
