Nine trench evaluation In the northern field, the evaluation trenching identified a possible undated post-hole in Trench 2 at the northeast and north to south aligned furrows, with rubble drains along their base in Trenches 4 and 5. The orientation of the furrows correlated well with the ridge and furrow evident on aerial photographs dated to the 1940's. In the southern field, the evaluation revealed stone-built drains in Trenches 6 and 8, along with a northeast to southwest aligned feature in Trench 8, which sealed one of the stone drains. This may be the result of seasonal waterlogging or a track. Aerial images show a break in the ridge and furrow here, perhaps reflecting a track, or marshy ground at the foot of the slope.
