In response to conditions placed on the planning permissions for development at The Straw House, 1A Spicer Street, St Albans, Hertfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the developer to undertake a programme of archaeological monitoring of the development groundworks. It was considered that the present investigation had the potential to contribute to an understanding of the development of the Straw House and the origins and development of settlement in the core of the medieval town. However, no archaeological features or deposits were revealed during the groundworks. Only modern features were revealed cut into a deep overburden deposit that strongly suggests that the basements to the east were constructed using a cut and fill technique to terrace the hillside.
