Across two days an archaeologist observed and monitored the stripping of topsoil/garden soil within the garden of The Valiant Solider, covering an area of approximately 300m2 and included a 15m long by 0.5m wide draining ditch to the south-east. The max depth observed was to 0.7m and no archaeological features, deposits or artefactual remains were uncovered. An archaeological watching brief was carried out by Jonny Martin (Freelance) with managerial aid from ISCA Archaeology Limited on the 17th and 18th of April 2023, on behalf of Stephen Parker of the Buckfastleigh Trust, during groundworks associated with the garden of The Valiant Solider, Fore Street, Buckfastleigh. These works were completed under the methodology set out by a Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI) completed by ISCA Archaeology (2023) and included monitoring of the stripping of grass and topsoil, and a small drainage trench, these were excavated using a toothless grading bucket. The Site comprises of a single plot of land, representing the garden of The Valiant Solider and covers an area approximately 300m2. The groundworks consisted of an area strip of approximately 21.5m long and 17m wide, bounded by the existing garden walls and was excavated to a depth of 0.5m and typically between 0.2m and 0.3m deep. A small drainage ditch was also excavated to the south-east of this area close to the existing house, which measured approximately 15m long and 0.5-0.7m wide and 0.6m deep. The soil sequence consisted of up to 0.5m of dark grey-brown loose clayey silt topsoil, containing 19th Century and modern ceramic fragments. This sealed a grey-brown compacted clayey silt which contained lime mortar and slate, interpreted on-site as a likely made-ground Deposit. No archaeological features or deposits were observed, and no artefactual material was recovered. .
