This work was carried out for the Yorkshire Gardens Trust to inform a new programme of research on the history of the park and gardens. Analytical survey was carried out on a massive flat topped bank with mounds at opposing ends. As part of the survey the opportunity was taken to survey a prominent mound on the opposite side of the valley in the parish of Skirpenbeck. The work provided the first detailed archaeological analysis of the earthwork and concluded that it was a garden feature created by the Darley family by appropriating the remains of a Norman motte-and-bailey castle and forming part of a more extensive post-medieval landscape
