Between the 24th and 27th of July 2023 Oxford Archaeology conducted a trial trench evaluation at The Stackyard, Little Chesterford in Essex (centred on TL 51552 41980). Five trenches were excavated within a 0.5ha area proposed for residential development. Whilst the site is located within a Romano-British landscape with known prehistoric features identified in the adjacent fields, no archaeological features dating from before the modern period were recorded. All features identified within the development area were probably related to brick farm structures built and demolished at the site during the 20th century. A small assemblage of finds were recovered from the subsoil of one trench. These comprised prehistoric fired clay, Roman pottery, Anglo-Saxon pottery and undated animal bone.
