Wessex Archaeology was commissioned to undertake an archaeological walkover survey at the Skirts of Foudland development area, near Huntly, Aberdeenshire. This work was undertaken in response to a planning condition for a walkover survey by Aberdeenshire Council prior to consenting the erection of a temporary meteorological mast (Planning Reference APP/2011/2611). The objective of the survey was to assess known cultural heritage assets recorded in the Aberdeenshire Sites and Monuments Record (SMR), the National Monument Record of Scotland (NMRS) and record previously unknown cultural heritage assets. Of the six sites recorded within the Aberdeenshire Sites and Monuments Records and National Monuments Record Scotland only three were identified during the walkover survey (WA 2001, 2002 and 2005). Seven previously unrecorded sites were located during the survey (WA 1000-1006) including a number of probable clearance cairns, two cairns located on the summit of Red Hill and two possible platforms.
