1.1.1 Wessex Archaeology were commissioned by RPS Consulting Services Ltd (hereafter referred to as 'the Client') on behalf of Balfour Beatty PLC, to undertake a programme of palaeoenvironmental assessment of samples retained during archaeological works at Springhead Bridge Works, Springhead, Kent. 1.1.2 The archaeological works were associated with bulk ground reduction and detailed recording and sampling of the exposed (peat and alluvial) deposits within the footprint of the bridge abutments within the Springhead Quarter Phase 3: Northern Link Road, Ebbsfleet. The interim results of that assessment are presented here, with a full report on the results forthcoming. At this stage, it can be confirmed that no further analysis will be required on the diatom and microfaunal (ostracod and foraminifera) assemblages. Further work on the plant macrofossil assemblage is unlikely to be required. To date, almost half of the pollen samples have been assessed, with only two of the 19 samples assessed having any potential for further analysis. The requirement for further pollen analysis will be determined upon completion of the remaining samples. At this stage it is unlikely that any further radiocarbon dates will be required, although this will be confirmed following the results of the pollen assessment.
