The Archaeological Evaluation by Trial Trenching was commissioned byRedrow Homes and undertaken by MAP Archaeological Practice Ltd. to assess the impact of the proposed residential development on Land to the rear of 267-317 Leeds Road, Newton Hill, Wakefield, West Yorkshire. Eight Evaluation trenches were excavated, each measuring 40m by 2m. Turf and topsoil were removed using a mechanical excavator with toothless ditching bucket. After removal of overburden the excavation trenches were hand-cleaned. Five of the eight trenches contained ephemeral Modern or undated features, including a Modern field/hedge boundary trench, a tree bowl and five small pits/postholes. These archaeological features probably all relate to the use of the area as orchards in the recent past. One sherd of 19th Century pottery was found.
