This report presents the results of archaeological evaluation trenching that was carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) for a residential development on land at Godolphin Cross, Forth Vean, Breage, Cornwall. The work was carried out in accordance with a Written Scheme of Investigation (Boyd 2022) that was drawn up in consultation with the Historic Environment and Planning Advice Officer (HEPAO) at Cornwall Council. A total of six archaeological evaluation trenches that totalled 75m in length were opened under archaeological supervision by a tracked mechanical excavator that was fitted with a 1m wide toothed bucket. The stratigraphy of the site comprised: topsoil, a dark brown silt loam that was c.0.1-0.3m thick; which overlay the natural, a slightly greyish-yellow clay with occasional small sub-angular stones (>60mm diameter). The soils to the north of the access track were generally shallower, though modern disturbance and modern finds were found within all of the trenches. A single archaeological feature was noted, namely Ditch/Gully [602]. It was orientated east-west and it ran parallel to the access track. It was c.0.3m in width and it had vertical sides with a slightly concave to flat base. It was filled with a grey-brown silt-clay (topsoil) fill. It was considered to be a modern feature and it was likely to be a removed service trench. A small assemblage of predominantly modern finds were recovered from the site, all of which were subsequently discarded.
