Excavation of one trench measuring 25.7m long by 3.0m wide to inform future strategy of archaeological works related to redevelopment of the former Mount Royale Hotel, York, YO24 1GU. The evaluation programme at 117-119 The Mount was unable to establish the depth of natural geological deposits. The location of a sewer pipe could not be accurately established but it can be narrowed down to the southern end of the excavated trench. Due to access issues no works were conducted in the garden to the rear of the property. Although, 42 fragments of disarticulated human remains were encountered these are not interpreted as relating to an organised cemetery. It is likely that the disarticulated human remains were imported with the soil during the extensive landscaping of the area. Archaeological monitoring is recommended during the active phase of construction works to inform our knowledge of the historic development and landscaping of the site as well as to provide for the collection of any further disturbed human remains.
