In March 2022, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation next to the river Black bourn at Sapiston, Suffolk. A total of ten trenches were excavated. Initially six trenches were proposed for the area and deep naturally forming stratigraphy including alluvial layers and desiccated peat formations were present throughout the trenches. A large well preserved burnt mound was discovered at the southern end of the site, located below peat formations and flood deposits. A re-design was then submitted excluding the burnt mound area and two additional trenches were excavated showing similar deep stratigraphy but no cut features. A further re-design is likely to move the location away from the burnt mound.
