Eight trenches were opened in total, with one of these measuring 30m by 2m, and the remainder measuring 50m by 2m. This was conducted under constant archaeological supervision using a 360o 14-tonne tracked mechanical excavator fitted with a toothless ditching bucket. The trenches were excavated by machine down to the first archaeological horizon, or to the working limit of 1.2m. Further investigation of potential archaeological features was undertaken by hand. The archaeological work was undertaken over three days between 20th and 22nd December 2023. A total of eight trenches were excavated, revealing modern made ground to a significant depth, particularly in the north of the site. Across much of the site, the original subsoil appeared to have been removed, along with any archaeological potential. Several modern land drains and services were identified, as well as areas of bioturbation, and a possible filled pond or hollow. These features account for several of the anomalies detected in the prior geophysical survey. No remains of historical significance were encountered. No finds were recovered.
