Dataset: Reports population data for the People’s Republic of China, by sex and by urban and rural jurisdictions, along with data on population change, including birth and death rates, by sex and by urban and rural populations. The annual statistics on total population are taken as of midnight, December 31 for a given year. Not included are residents in Taiwan province, Chinese compatriots in Hong Kong and Macao, and overseas Chinese.
Provides yearly historical indicators of social and economic characteristics of the People’s Republic of China. Included are national-level statistics dating in some cases to the 1950s on population; national accounts, including Gross Domestic Product and Balance of Payments; employment, labor, and wages; financial and banking data; price indices; government income and expenditures; agriculture; industry, construction, and transportation; domestic and foreign trade; education; health; and natural resources. The data are collected primarily by the National Bureau of Statistics of China, who is charged with the administration of the national statistical information system of China. Definitions of urban and rural population vary by period. (1) For the period 1952-1980, urban and rural population are defined by administrative system: urban population refers to total population under the jurisdiction of city and the population of towns under the jurisdiction of counties; and rural population refers to total population of townships under the jurisdiction of counties.
