Dataset: Industry refers to the material production sector, which is engaged in extraction of natural resources and processing and reprocessing of minerals and agricultural products, including (1) extraction of natural resources, eg, mining, salt production, and logging; (2) processing and reprocessing of farm and sideline produces, eg, rice husking, flour milling, wine making, oil pressing, cotton ginning, silk reeling, spinning and weaving, and leather making; (3) manufacture of industrial products, eg, steel making, iron smelting, chemicals manufacturing, petroleum processing, machine building, timber processing; water and gas production and electricity generation and supply; and (4) repairing of industrial products such as the repairing of machinery and means of transport (including cars). Industries are further classified as light (ie, produces consumer goods and hand tools) and heavy (ie, produces capital goods); and as state-owned or collective-owned, or funded as a joint venture with Macao, Hong Kong, Taiwan, or a foreign entity. Data are presented here on the number of enterprises and average number of employees by type. The value of industry by type and by product are also reported in total and as percentages of 1952 and preceding year values. Data are presented at the national level and for all provinces, segmented by cities and counties within provinces, and for all counties.
