Dataset: Presents the percentage of United States adults who had either diagnosed or undiagnosed diabetes. Pregnant females are included. Diagnosed diabetes is defined as responding "yes" to the question "{Other than during pregnancy,} Have you ever been told by a doctor or health professional that you have diabetes or sugar diabetes?" Undiagnosed diabetes is defined as not having diagnosed diabetes and having a fasting blood glucose of at least 126 mg/dL or a hemoglobin A1c greater than or equal to 6.5%.
This dataset presents estimates of the percentage of United States adults 20 years and older who have diagnosed, undiagnosed, and all diabetes, 1988 to 2008, reported as four-year annual averages, by age, sex, year, and race/ethnicity.
Diagnosed diabetes is defined as responding "yes" to the question "Other than during pregnancy, have you ever been told by a doctor or health professional that you have diabetes or sugar diabetes?" Undiagnosed diabetes is defined as not having diagnosed diabetes and having a fasting blood glucose of at least 126 mg/dL or a hemoglobin A1c greater than or equal to 6.5%. Total diabetes is the percent of respondents who had either diagnosed or undiagnosed diabetes. Pregnant females are included. Estimates for all years were revised as of 2/2011 to reflect this revised definition of undiagnosed diabetes. The data are from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), a national survey designed to collect information on the health and nutritional status of the US civilian noninstitutionalized population through in-home interviews and physical examinations. The health examination is performed in a mobile exam center (MEC). Starting in 1999, the NHANES has been conducted continuously.
