Data are from the Local Education Agency (School District) Finance Survey (F-33). Data are also collected by the Governments Division of the U.S. Census Bureau, and have been released as the F-33 survey. Revenues and expenditures are audited after the close of the fiscal year and are then submitted to NCES by each state education agency.

NCES is located within the US Department of Education and the Institute of Education Sciences.
