United States Census Bureau. Housing Starts: Total Housing Starts - Seasonally Adjusted, 01/1960 - 02/2015. Data-Planet™ Statistical Datasets by Conquest Systems, Inc. Dataset-ID: 001-034-001
Dataset: Reports an estimate of the total number of single- and multi-unit housing units in the United States on which construction began during the reporting period. The beginning of construction is defined as the date when excavation begins for the footings or foundation of a building. The data are adjusted by estimating and removing seasonal effects in order to better reveal nonseasonal features. Seasonal effects are attributed to such factors as the weather, administrative measures (starting and ending dates of the school year), and social/cultural/religious traditions and/or holidays, or unpredictable events, such as natural disasters or strikes.
This dataset shows the number of housing units on which construction began during the reporting period. The beginning of construction is defined as the date when excavation began on the footings or foundation of a building. The data are from a monthly mail survey of selected areas issuing buildings permits and field visits to selected areas not issuing permits. Approximately 2.5% of new construction occurs in areas that do not issue building permits. The number of housing starts is considered a key economic indicator.
