Note that multiple entries exist for bank branches at the same street address in cases where the bank holding company has changed over time.
The Summary of Deposits (SOD) dataset contains deposit data for branches and offices of all institutions insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The FDIC collects deposit balances for commercial and savings banks as of June 30 of each year, and the Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS) collects the same data for savings institutions. Data are collected annually. Users can access data by: (1) single institution, (2) institutions within a geographic area, or (3) aggregated within a geographic area. NOTE: Data are collected at the institutional level; FIPS code for the bank headquarters office is also provided. County and state national numbers are calculated based on the given FIPS codes, and national numbers are created as a roll-up of the detailed numbers.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) was established under the Banking Act of 1933 in response to numerous bank failures that occurred in the United States during the Great Depression. The FDIC promotes and preserves public confidence in US institutions by insuring bank and thrift deposits; by examining state-chartered banks that are not members of the Federal Reserve System for safety and soundness as well as compliance with consumer protection laws; and by liquidating assets of failed institutions to reimburse the insurance funds for the cost of failures.
