The comic presented demonstrates the importance of species co-occurrence and the resulting positive interactions of native shrubs and annual species of the Mojave Desert in California. The main character or annual beneficiary species (cactus) is well relaxed and suitable for the conditions in his habitat. From the implications of climate change, he soon realizes the temperature of his home is increasing and figures out he cannot survive on his own. After a long journey of searching for a better suited habitat, the cactus reaches the utopia of all deserts, Niche Heaven. Here, he discovers a native shrub plant (niche constructor) that offers him a residency in his microclimate. Other annual species have moved to Niche Heaven in search of a better life with the native shrubs. The dominant shrubs create a suitable habitat for the annuals who cannot survive solely on their own, and soon enough the main cactus finds himself thriving in the presence of these other native species who meet his own niche requirements. It is revealed that Niche Heaven is constantly expanding due to the community of species that are aiding in the process of facilitation and positive plant interactions. By increasing the environment’s diversity and species interactions, more niche space is created, expanding the geographic range. Thus, the loss of dominant plant species and related positive interactions would significantly reduce an ecosystem’s resistance to environmental stressors, resulting in species loss. The comic highlights the importance of considering biotic components in realized niches and the effect of co-occurrence in the event of climate change.
