This repository contains 4 maps which support our article entitled "Rural tourism in Portugal: Moving to the countryside": Figure 1: Map of mainland Portugal with dots representing rural tourism units, patches denoting Natura 2000 areas, and two line-boundaries in red and blue denoting, respectively, the Douro and Vinhos Verdes wine designation of controlled origins. The backdrop of the map features a kernel density surface of rural tourism units in 2021, showing a high concentration of rural accommodation in the north-western part of the country. Figure 2: A land cover map of mainland Portugal representing natural and agricultural areas. The map provides a point layer representing the location of each rural tourism unit. Figure 3: A four-section figure with four maps of mainland Portugal, featuring the dissemination and density of rural tourism units in 2000 (upper left), 2007 (upper right), 2014 (lower left), and 2021 (lower right). Each map features dots and a kernel density surface, as the backdrop, representing rural tourism units. Figure 4: Map of mainland Portugal with dots representing rural tourism units by age, and colored patches indicating the urbanization character (degree) of an area: water, mostly uninhabited, dispersed rural areas, villages, suburbs, semi-dense towns, dense towns, and urban centers.
