Objective: The objective of this submission is to evaluate the use of an open repository to publish manuscript Plain Language Summaries (mPLSs) as a method used by Pfizer to increase visibility around academic research. We also wanted to connect those mPLSs to clinical trials, peer-reviewed manuscripts, supporting data, as well as other enhanced publication content. Methods: We conducted an 8-month pilot study, from August 2021 to March 2022, to evaluate the capabilities of Figshare to publish manuscript Plain Language Summaries, supplementary journal materials, and as a Green OA repository. Scientific Publication Committees identified non-traditional research scientific content to host on this platform, specifically when the peer-reviewed journal was not an option. Results: So far, 25 publications have been published on the Figshare portal. indicate that the platform has been effective in reaching a wide audience, with a breakdown of usage by specific use case revealed that mPLS were the most viewed and downloaded among users (4,116 views and 823 downloads). It also was the most published use case (15 mPLS, 6 supplementary materials, 4 Enhanced Publication Content). Conclusions: The pilot study yielded encouraging results, prompting the incorporation of the Figshare site into Pfizer’s established procedures. Considering the rapidly evolving landscape of scientific communication, the platform has been expanded to include enhanced publication content. Initial metrics suggest the project’s objectives, particularly in terms of increasing visibility and engagement with the medical community, are being met. Monitoring altmetric and usage data is ongoing to assess the progress towards the ultimate goal of positively impacting patients’ lives through increased accessibility to scientific information.
