This experiment is designed to test the feasibility of using seismicity patterns to enhance a field instructional exercise in seismic hazard assessment. The field work is to be conducted within a series of small extensional basins in SW Montana. The faults along the margins of these basins have a moderately high rate of seismic activity in the 0-2 magnitude range. Having a local seismometer to record these events would allow the students to gain experience working with raw seismic data. A number of earth filled dams have been constructed in this region; in some cases, the dams have been constructed along fault scarps that have created natural barriers to stream flow resulting in the cutting of tight canyons creating easy locations to construct dams for water impoundment. It is anticipated that it will take two years to establish the effectiveness of having a seismometer at the Indiana Geologic Field Station. We will work with State of Montana and the University of Utah to provide a real time data feed from this seismometer.
