The passive seismic experiment is part of a NSF Continental Dynamics project trying to understand the early stage of rifting. Approximately fifty PASSCAL broadband stations will be deployed along 3 rift-orthogonal profiles at an interval of about 50 km at locations outside the rifted valleys, and 20-30 km inside the valleys. Each profile consists of 15-17 stations and is about 550 km long. The portable stations will record for a two-year period with a sampling rate of 100 samples per second.Environment:Low MountainAdditional comments:Approximately 15 stations will be in Botswana, 15 in Zambia, 10 in Congo, 5 in Malawi, and 5 in Tanzania. Given the large area covered by the stations and the logistic complexity, two field teams will be formed: one for Botswana+Congo, and one for Zambia+Malawi+Tanzania
