During the winter of 2010/2011 an avalanche forecasting model, the Snow Slope Stability (SNOSS) model, will be implemented to forecast for natural avalanches. SNOSS provides hourly stability ratings calculated from weather station data. To determine if SNOSS is providing an accurate forecast, the timing of avalanche events is required. During large storms, the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) avalanche forecasters will close the road until the storm is over, preventing avalanche timing. A system of geophones and infrasonic sensors will be placed in strategic areas near the most active avalanche paths. The time of an avalanche event can therefore be determined by observing the seismic signal produced, validating SNOSS. The geophones and infrasonic sensors will remain in place for the entire winter to provide continuous avalanche monitoring.
