Miguel Caetano (MC) holds a degree in Chemistry and a PhD in Marine Sciences. He developed his scientific career on topics related to the Marine Environment. Its current scientific focus lies in investigating the Anthropocene impact on the marine environment, particularly biogeochemical processes. MC research projects and contracts with public and private entities revolve around the biogeochemical cycle of metals, exploring their dynamics among water, sediment, and organisms. Furthermore, his studies developed within the scope of the environmental impacts of marine estuarine sediment dredging operations, and sediment immersion was always a strong component of his work. Over the past 15 years (2008-2023), his research development has been demonstrated through his leadership in four projects with competitive funding, two national projects with governmental funding, and the coordination of six research/monitoring contracts with private and public entities. Collaborating with teams from IPMA and CIIMAR, he has also participated in 30 national and international research projects. MC has participated in educating more than 15 young researchers and authored >149 ISI scientific papers with >6,000 citations. He is a Principal Investigator at the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) and the leader of the “Contaminant Pathways in Marine Environment” at CIIMAR. He represented Portugal in the Marine Chemistry Working Group and is a member of the Advises Committee of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). In 2018, MC was selected as a member of the pool of experts for the Second Cycle of the Regular Global Assessment Process of the State of the Marine Environment, including Socioeconomic Aspects of the United Nations. He was also appointed Chairman of the Standing Committee on Fisheries Environment (STACFEN) of the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO), where he coordinates the monitoring and investigation of oceanographic conditions and their impact on fisheries resources in the Northwest Atlantic. Additionally, MC is a member of the Executive Council and the Scientific Council of NAFO. He is a national representative of the Management Board of the JPIOceans-Joint Programming Initiative on Healthy and Productive Seas and Oceans AISBL.
