Alexander Kabanov, a Distinguished Professor at the Eshelman School of Pharmacy, UNC-Chapel Hill, director of Center for Nanotechnology in Drug Delivery and Carolina Institute for Nanomedicine. Professor of Chemistry Department, Moscow State University. Graduated from the Moscow State University in 1984, where also received Ph.D. in 1987 and D.Sc. in 1990. His work led to the first polymeric micelle drug to enter clinical trials. He made broad impact by introducing polymeric micelles, DNA/polycation complexes, block ionomer complexes, nanogels and exosomes for the therapeutic delivery of small drugs, nucleic acids and proteins. Highly Cited Researcher in Pharmacology and Toxicology. Published over 300 scientific papers, holds 35 US patents and co-founded several pharmaceutical companies. Trained over 65 graduate students and postdocs. Founded the Nanomedicine and Drug Delivery symposium series (www.nanodds.org), Carolina Nanoformulation Workshop (virtualCNW.org), chaired Gordon Research Conferences. Honors include Lenin Komsomol Prize, NSF Career award, and George Gamow award. Elected to Academia Europaea, US National Academy of Inventors, Russian Academy of Sciences, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and the Controlled Release Society (CRS) College of Fellows.
