I am a Consultant, Professor and clinical group leader in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, based at the Francis Crick Institute and University College London, and with honorary affiliations to University College London Hospitals (UCLH), Central North West London (CNWL) NHS Trust, and the Nuffield Department of Medicine at the University of Oxford.
I lead a research group focusing on enhancing understanding of the relationship between host and virus in outcomes of hepatitis B virus (HBV), with international collaborations supporting particular focus on populations in WHO Africa. We are interested in translational research embraced in a wide interdisciplinary programme, to inform real-world diagnostic, treatment and prevention strategies.
In addition to hepatitis viruses, I have a wider interest in viral diagnostics, and work closely with other teams working on laboratory diagnosis and characterisation of infection, including blood borne and respiratory viruses (most recently SARS-CoV-2).
I am an enthusiastic promoter of open science, and have worked with a variety of stakeholders in academic publishing. I have leadership roles in medical education, teaching and supervising graduate and post-graduate students via taught and research programmes, and between 2017-2021 was Chair of the Athena SWAN team, leading equity and diversity work for the Nuffield Department of Medicine in Oxford.
