Cecília R.C. Calado is professor at ISEL-Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa, Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa since September 2014, were she is member of the Pedagogical Council since 2014 and coordinates the BSc and MSc in Biomedical Engineering since 2015 and 2018, respectively, and the R&D laboratory in Health & Engineering since 2015. Is member of the Ethics Commission since 2021.
Academic degrees: Aggregation (2022, Évora University), PhD in Biotechnology (2003, Instituto Superior Técnico, Technical Lisbon University), MSc in Biochemical Engineering/ Biotechnology (1998, Instituto Superior Técnico) and a honorous degree in Biochemistry (5 years university degree, 1995, Sciences Faculty, Lisbon University).
Past professional positions: Between 2004 to 2014, was professor at the Engineering Faculty of the Catholic University of Portugal (FE-UCP), were coordinated since 2006 the BSc and MSc courses in Biomedical Engineering and the research laboratory in Biomedical Engineering. She was member of the directors’ board between 2009 and 2013, being responsible by the Projects Management Office, management of the extension of João Paulo II library and the Marketing. Was responsible by the management of the teaching laboratories of Chemistry and Microbiology between 2008 and 2009. Was a member of the Scientific Council between 2006 and 2014. Between 2003 and 2006, was post-doc researcher (with a scholarship FCT-Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, Portugal), at the Instituto Superior Técnico in “Integration methods for plasmid production for gene therapy and DNA vaccination”.
R&D activities & supervision: Presents a broad experience in R&Di in Bioprocess Engineering, drugs discovery & development and biomarkers discovery. Has coordinated scientific projects, financed by agencies external to the University in a total of 1,400 K€. Already conducted 3 Thesis (BSc, MSc and PhD), published 6 book chapters, 39 scientific articles and 26 proceedings, and done 103 conference communications. She supervisioned 5 PhD students and 33 MSc students.
Other activities: She was the responsible person (PEP) by the accreditation agency A3ES of 6 courses: BSc, MSc and PhD courses in Biomedical Engineering between 2006 to 2010 of the Engineering Faculty (UCP) , in 2014 of a MSC in Biomedical Engineering and a BSc in Biomedical Technologies, and at 2016 of a BSc in Biomedical Engineering of the ISEL. Since 2019, she is evaluator of accreditation processes of MSc courses at the A3ES agency. Between 2010 to 2011, evaluated R&D projects at CRUP (Council of Deans of the Portuguese Universities), and of the BES Contest. Between 2010-2013 was member of the Executive Board of the Portuguese Chapter in Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMB) of IEEE. She is member of the EMB-IEEE, European Federation of Biotechnology and of the International Association for Promotion of Healthcare and Life-Science Research – IAPHLSR. Since 2018, is IEEE senior advisor of the ISEL IEEE Biomedical Engineering Student branch. She was Chair of the IEEE 6th Portuguese Meeting in Bioengineering. Simultaneously to these multiple projects, she has been promoting various activities to promote science among specific groups while enhancing general public awareness to Science. This includes organizing activities to university students (e.g. of soft-skills courses), non-university students (e.g. co-host of 3 First Lego-League national contests, 2 university open-days and 2 national contests on Engineering, Innovation and Sustainability), high-school teachers (diverse courses and seminars) among other communications at different research groups or events including on Patents and Technology Transfer.
