I am dedicated to the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of learning and memory. Early in my career in Japan (1996–2008), I focused on the molecular basis of cerebellar motor learning. In the UK (2008-2018), I have focused on memory for events and facts that depend on the hippocampus. I investigated neural mechanisms that are responsible for (1) assimilation of new memory into the relevant knowledge in the neocortex (Tse, Takeuchi et al., Science, 2011) and (2) selective retention of trivial memory in the hippocampus (HPC) through neuromodulation (Takeuchi et al., Nature, 2016). I would like to advance the understanding of the molecular and systems-level mechanisms of selective retention of trivial memory and of assimilation of this memory into neocortical knowledge.
