Alan J. Stewart graduated from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, with a B.Sc.(Honours) degree in Biochemistry in 1999 and a Ph.D. degree in 2003. He then took up a postdoctoral fellowship at the Roslin Institute before joining the MRC Human Reproductive Sciences Unit as a Career Development Fellow in 2006. In 2009, he was appointed to a faculty position within the School of Medicine at the University of St Andrews, UK. Since moving to St Andrews, his research has focused upon the roles that metal ions play in the body. Of particular interest is their influence upon cellular processes through their interactions with proteins and their emergence as important mediators of disease.
